The Simple Past Tense

  1. Form.

A-The simple past tense with regular verbs is formed by adding {ed} to the infinitive. For example;

B-Spelling notes: the rules about doubling the final consonant when adding ing is used also in simple past. For example,

To admit…………………………I’m admitting………………………………I admitted

To travel…………………………he is travelling…………………………….he travelled

To stop…………………………..they are stopping……………………..….they stopped

. Verbs ending with Y following a consonant change the Y into i before adding {ed}. For example,

To try………………………………. I tried

To carry…………………………… He carried

Irregular verbs: these vary considerably in their simple past form.

  1. Uses of the Simple Past.

A- It is used for actions completed in the past at a definite time. It is used, therefore.

1-For a past action when the time is given.

I met him yesterday.

Pasteur died in 1895.

2- When the time is asked about.

When did you meet him?

When did she dye?

3- For an action clearly took place at a definite time even if this time is not mentioned.

The train was ten minutes late.

How did you get your job?

I bought this car from London.

B- The simple past is used for an action whose time is not given

1- For a past habit action.

. He always carried an umbrella.

. They never drank wine.

2- The simple past is used in conditional type 2 (unreal past).

If she worked hard, she would have been succeeded.
