Goal: use comparatives (taller / more interesting), superlatives (the tallest / the most interesting), equatives (as…as), and common modifiers (much, a lot, far, a bit). Click the 🔊 buttons to listen.
1) How to form comparisons
Comparative Adj-er + than (short adjectives) / more + Adj + than (long adjectives)
Superlative the Adj-est / the most + Adj
Spelling: big → bigger (double consonant), nice → nicer (drop “e”), happy → happier (-y → -ier)
Type | Base | Comparative | Superlative | Example (🔊) |
---|---|---|---|---|
Short (1 syll.) | tall | taller than | the tallest | Sara is taller than Ben. |
Long (2+ syll.) | interesting | more interesting than | the most interesting | This book is more interesting than the film. |
Irregular | good / bad / far | better / worse / farther/further | the best / worst / farthest/furthest | This café is better than that one. |
Equative | — | as + Adj + as / not as/so + Adj + as | My phone is as fast as yours. It’s not as expensive as mine. |
Modifiers & common mistakes
Stronger: much / far / a lot + comparative → “far more convenient”, “much cheaper”
Weaker: a bit / slightly → “a bit slower”
❌ Don’t use double comparatives: more better → ✔ better
Use than after comparatives: “bigger than”, not “bigger from”.
